Oh gosh! I visit galleries whenever I travel and when at home too. I stumbled across Lurie's exhibition at the Musee des Beaux Artes in Montreal last year. I never laughed so hard in an art gallery before.:D

Untitled is probably the most common title there is. Most of art is untitled. But when you're doing digital art (or posting art here), the program requires you to give the 'file' a distinct designation. Numbers are a fine solution as file names. They worked for the great composers.

I agree, you do have to be careful with titles. I often look at the title only after I've studied the piece and made my own impressions. For the grotto piece, I guess I didn't want people to think the butterfly was there just to be pretty. They can still think that if they wish, but, yeah, I did want to point them in a direction with the title in this case.

Best conscious use of titles as works of art in themselves that I've ever encountered was the work of John Lurie:

My rationale for the numbers is to avoid interfering with anyone's personal interpretation of my abstracts. I don't number my poems but I am tempted sometimes! But the poems do have titles and not as much room for intepretation, so I don't.

I don't get too precious with my titles either. (I haven't resorted to numbers as you have, but then I'm not nearly as prolific as you are.;)) Titles just sort of present themselves to me somewhere in the process. In this case, I knew the title, but forgot to change the working title.:)

I confess ... I rarely notice titles. I read the writings of promising folks and look for their names.

You are most welcome! :frail:
